Transform your closet and help others
Ginger Burr, President, Total Image Consultants

Do feel a sense of delight every time you open your closet to get dressed, or do you cringe and try to get in and out as quickly as possible? Can you find things easily? Do you wear everything in there or do you always grab your favorites? If you are less than satisfied with your morning routine, try these quick closet tips you can implement right away:

1. The #1 thing every closet and wardrobe needs: Great hangers. Because most closets have doors, it feels easy to ignore what's behind them. Close the door, and the belief is that if it's out of sight, it's out of mind. When your clothes hang haphazardly, you are less likely to know what you have to wear and your clothes suffer (recycle those wire dry cleaner hangers right away!). Clear plastic hangers (like department stores use) are great and affordable. Find them at Best Hangers.

2. Transform your closet one day at a time. Once a day (either in the morning when you get dressed or if it's more peaceful at night, then that's fine too), remove one thing from your closet, and ask yourself these three questions:
  • Have I worn it in the past year?
  • Is it part of a complete outfit I can wear now?
  • Do I love it?
If you answered no to any of those questions, remove the item from your closet and if it is in good repair, donate it to Second Chances. You will know your clothes are being cherished (and worn!) by someone who is happy to have them, and you won't feel guilty every time you see them hanging (unworn!) in your closet. Imagine doing this once a day for the next 30 days. How much more manageable (and wearable) will your wardrobe be?

Our impact
While the economy is beginning to show occasional signs of improvement, donations of funding and in-kind items to Second Chances and our community partners decreased dramatically during the recent economic uncertainty. At the same time, there are more people than ever who need our services, and their needs are even deeper than they were before.

The good news is that Second Chances is currently on track to provide 20% more clothing, shoes and accessories to people in need in 2010 than we did in 2009. While we have experienced a 25% decrease in clothing donations and a 40% decrease in financial contributions, we are digging deeper to help even more people in need in our community. Why are we doing this? Because it's the right thing to do. I hope that you will support our work if you can. »

What an incredible spring! We had twelve clothing drives in April and May, with ten now finished and two still going on. Thank you to each of you who coordinated or participated in a clothing drive. Your commitment to the people we serve and to recycling and reuse mean so much to us and our work.
